It’s my first class – what do I need to know?

Awesome! Good on you for starting ballet.

It’s a good idea to be a few minutes early to find the studio and get yourself organized.  Class will start with a simple warm-up, followed by exercises holding onto a rail called the “barre“.  Some of these step are then repeated in the center to challenge your balance and skills.  Class will end with a cool-down and a “reverence” where the teacher and the students thank each other for the class.

For your first class, you don’t need to wear anything special.  A singlet top or gym top paired with 3/4 pants or leggings are a great option.  For guys, a loose fitting t-shirt and shorts are fine.  If you have ballet shoes already then bring them along.  If not, a pair of cotton socks will keep your feet safe.

Make sure your hair is tied up and off your face, and remove any loose or dangling jewellery for your own and others students’ safety.

Make sure you bring a water bottle.  A hand towel and deodorant are good options if you tend to sweat a lot.

If you’re still nervous, that’s ok.  We’re a friendly bunch at Simply Ballet and you aren’t the only person worried to step through the door for the first time.  Just come along and before you know it you’ll be caught up in the magic of ballet!
